What is Lipid Profile?

Lipid profile test also known as complete cholesterol test,lipid panel or lipoprotein profile.Cholesterol and Triglycerides are two important lipids or fats in our body.These two are important for cell health but not good when they build up more in the blood.Having more cholesterol or triglycerides may cause atherosclerosis and also increases the risk of heart diseases,stroke & other health problems.This test done with a blood sample.
Lipid profile test is conducted to measure the following parameters:
  • Total Cholesterol
  • HDL Cholesterol-Good Cholesterol
  • LDL Cholesterol-Bad Cholesterol
  • Triglycerides-another type of fat
  • VLDL Cholesterol
  • NON-HDL Cholesterol

When I need to get lipid profile test?

When you  :-
  • have diabetes
  • have family history of heart disease,high cholesterol or stroke
  • have smoking habit
  • have high total cholesterol 
  • have stress
  • follow unhealthy diet
  • being overweight
  • suffering from hypertension

How I should prepare for lipid profile test?

Fasting period of minimum 12-14 hours is required before sample collection.
You should not eat and should not drink any beverages like tea,coffee&milk during fasting period until sample collection is completed.You can drink only plain water in fasting period.

Before taking test you should inform your doctor about your family history of heart disease,medications that currently you are taking and also any other health problems if you have.

Also before taking test you should not drink alcohol.

Normal values of lipid profile test?

  • Total Cholesterol - Less then 200 mg/dL
  • HDL Cholesterol-Good Cholesterol - Greater then or equal to 60 mg/dL
  • LDL Cholesterol-Bad Cholesterol - 70-130 mg/dL
  • Triglycerides - Less then 150 mg/dL
  • VLDL Cholesterol - Less then 30 mg/dL
  • NON-HDL Cholesterol - Less then 130 mg/dL
